Traveling with CBD does not have to be complicated or stressful. We get a lot of questions about CBD oil, such as “Can you fly with CBD?” and “Is it legal to travel with CBD?” It’s a complicated topic, but luckily, according to the 2021 TSA CBD policy, the short answer is YES, you can travel with CBD—as long as it’s within the U.S.
Before you pack an extra carry-on stuffed to the brim with all of the best CBD products you can find, there are parameters you must double-check before you can comfortably fly. Below are a few things you need to know about the legality of CBD, and why you should pack a little for your trip back home this Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, or any other time!
What Do I Need to Know About Flying with CBD Products?
If you’re confused about whether or not CBD is legal, you’re not alone. It’s a messy issue that somehow seems to get even more muddled after more laws are passed, dividing state and federal regulations further.
The bottom line is this: When the Farm Bill passed in 2018, it declared CBD legal in all 50 states. Woohoo! Here’s the catch, though: to fully pass muster, the TSA states that the CBD must be derived from hemp (not marijuana) and it must contain no more than 0.3 percent THC. How can you be sure about the levels of THC in your CBD oil, or where it came from? While the label should be a good place to start, what you see is not always what you get.
A recent study found that of 84 tested CBD products, only about 30% were labeled correctly. Fortunately, you can rest assured that all Ojai Energetics products are properly labeled. We promise that our CBD is 100% hemp-derived, with trace THC amounts well within the legal limit.
Can you fly with CBD cream?
CBD topicals, such as gels, creams, and even oils, are safe to fly with if you’re traveling within the U.S. If you’re taking your CBD topicals through security screening, standard liquids rules apply. Make sure they’re in travel-sized containers (3.4oz or less) and easily accessible to remove from your luggage during the screening process. There are no weight restrictions for flying with CBD cream within America if it’s in your checked luggage.

Can you travel with CBD internationally?
Hemp-derived, <0.3% THC concentration CBD may be legal in the states, but unfortunately, that doesn’t give you a free pass for international travel. It’s less so about whether you can take it on a plane and more about your destination’s laws regarding CBD use.
Here are some examples of popular holiday destinations which ban the use of CBD. Whether or not your upcoming vacation spot is on this list, make sure you look carefully at the CBD laws of your travel region, as CBD use may still be restricted even if it’s not explicitly banned.

Benefits of carrying CBD oil on the plane
From crying babies to sitting uncomfortably close to strangers, there’s something slightly miserable about flying. If you’re feeling tense about your next cross-country flight, CBD may be able to help “chill” you out.
Taking CBD on the plane will help support healthy brain function by activating your endocannabinoid system. An optimized endocannabinoid system supports a balanced amygdala and hippocampus, which are the primary stress response centers of the brain.
Essentially, CBD allows you to equip yourself with the best ability to handle uncomfortable situations.
